I know I'm not telling you all something new but black powder though its fun to shoot is very dirty. My wife and I both shoot Vaquero's in .45LC. I reload and to say the brass is filthy is an understatement. What have any of you found works best to clean/polish brass for reloading. I've been using a vibratory tumbler with cobb media.

For milling the final powder, I put all three ingredients (nothing else except media...so no metal additives like you might find in a fireworks composition) and the media into a ball mill and run it. I am using the Horrible Freight double rock tumbler. They're about $56 but you can get 20% off coupons from time to time.

If you are in the UK there are lots of suppliers to be found on here and ebay. First do some (more) reading about milling media -5% of the forum seems to be mill or media related! If you have a small weedy rock tumbler then ceramic media may suit you. If you mill is more robust the lead media will give better milling and shorter times.

Fred, you can produce some good quality black powder in a rock tumbler, but most of these are not equipped to deal with the weight of the media used in milling. When you try to use a rock tumbler in this application, the length of the milling will approximately equal the lifetime of the rock tumbler itself. Harry C.

You can get a rock tumbler from Harbor Freight that makes a good mill. Use lead or preferably brass balls in it to do the crushing but not iron or anything that will make a spark. You can get the chemicals from Skylighter and other places.

Have not made black powder since I was, oh, 12. I have a Harbor Freight tumbler with its two rubber chambers suitable for milling BP. (I don't use the small rubber chambers for brass cleaning as I built a larger chamber from 4" PVC that holds more and is easier to seal and open.) There is no substitute when using Black Powder cartridges. You can get by with using ground walnut hulls or corn cob media when using smokeless. However, while they do a good job on the outside, they do little to clean the inside. Ceramic (USE THE CORRECT SIZE FOR THE CALIBER) not only lasts forever, but it cleans the inside as well as the outside.

Well i do most of my sanblasting at home on metals that im going to weld, so i was thinking why not use that stuff. It is Black Diamond from Northern Tool for the cost of only 5 bucks for a 50 pound bag.

You should buy a cheap harbor freight ball mill tumbler and buy some cheap dollar store marbles and run them chemicals separately. A ball mill will pulverize your powder chemicals down to 2 microns maybe even 1. The longer you run them the better. By the way wash you mill before adding another chemical

I use about 7200 rotations and it seems to work well. I found that with round balls and the Harbor Freight tumbler the powder tends to be forced up against the ends and clumps together. I don't mill my CC separately. I grind it in a meat grinder, mix all of the ingredients together and mill the whole mess at one time.

If you get the HF 6lb ball mill, those tumblers could be used to mill any or all of the primary ingredients of black powder - potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal. I use 16, 20 and 410 Ga. Magtech brass 2 1/2" shells loaded with smokeless powder in my shotguns with 2 1/2" chambers that I hunt with. Have done so for years. My Magtech boxes for all 3 gauges of brass shotshells do not say "Use Black Powder Only" anywhere on the box as has been referenced in this thread.

To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour. Your nitrate should be light and fluffy. If not, continue grinding it 'til it's fine powder with no chunks or grains.

You can dry your brass in the sun or in the oven at low heat (make sure your wife is not around!). If you decide to do this, I would do it as a second step after the soap and water to first get rid of the black powder residue. FYI, citric acid can usually be found at any store carrying canning supplies. My local Walmart carries it.

Of course you can. My little brother is a real renaissance man. He wanted to go to a mountain man black powder match. It wasn't enough to dress the part and use period correct equipment. In doing research into black powder, you've probably come across several other methods. Mortar and pestle – This can by all means be used to make serviceable compositions. I'd consider grounding the tumbler unless it is properly wired up with a return/ground wire through the plug, even use a little brass brush touching the tumbling cylinder as it goes round. You can get those out of an old tumble drier.
